700 is the magic figure which one should look for. At least a 650 is very strongly required. At the same time, GMAT score is just one factor for your selection to the b-school.

Duke and Nanyang may be difficult, unless you build a very strong profile in the next few months.

Everything depends on how your project yourself in your applications. All b-schools look for out of the box thinkers who have the passion and drive for innovation, and being extremely eager to bring about new solutions.

So you have to show how you think the world shaping up in future and how you contribute to that evolving process. This will prove you are a futuristic thinker, which all b-schools look for.

Remember, many of the iconic figures are either college dropouts or had been average in academics.

Kindly advice me some good b-schools according to my profile

    Would appreciate your advice. Thanks

Thanks for your reply Scott. I would love some support indeed.

  • 2017-03-10 Rituparna Roy Chowdhury

Yes, you are right - other aspects of the applicant are given more importance than GMAT score alone. b-schools look for those who hold the potential to become great entrepreneurs. They are rather less interested in those who have high GMAT scores and can talk only of an outstanding academic background. Leadership, vision and the ability to bring about disruption through innovation are the key factors for a student to achieve great heights in profession. Hence, b-schools try to judge you through your application whether you possess those non-academic attributes or not.

  • 2017-03-10 Rituparna Roy Chowdhury

You need to build very strong extra-curriculars, leadership, develop yourself having multiple interests and the passion to come up with something extra-ordinary. Otherwise, LBS, Nanyang would be difficult to reach. GMAT is just one of the factors for acceptance by b-schools. Most importantly, they look for those who can bring about disruptions with their out of the box thinking - we also have to remember that several iconic figures across the globe are either college drop outs or were average in academics. Hence, being an academic topper is not important. Rather being strong on the non-academic side really adds value and strength to a profile.

  • 2017-03-10 Rituparna Roy Chowdhury

You can apply to the top 20 universities with your background.

Remember, even average students can get accepted at top universities because US Universities believe Ordinary Students Can Deliver Extra-ordinary Results, as also Academic Brilliance Need Not Always Translate Into Professional Excellence.

Please read the story of Malvika Raj Joshi - then you can make out why passion is the most important factor for admissions.

Yes, an average student can get into MIT UC Berkley or Stanford. Sounds strange, but possible! All you have to do is, project yourself as a passionate innovator who can bring about new solutions through your out of box thinking.

US Universities look for an Einstein, Edison and Tesla inside you. Much more than your academic scores, they are eager to find out the hidden scientist inside you. So, explain in details, your past research projects and future areas of work where you see lot of opportunities.

Remember, Edison had been to school for just three months in his lifetime. In middle school, Einstein was a very ordinary student. Thus, the ability to become a scientist depends much more on innovative thinking than on being a class topper. So, think out of box, and you may end up with a path-breaking discovery.

So what matters is your passion for the subject and your drive for innovation.

As mentioned above, the specialized masters programs would be reasonable and good targets if you get a high GMAT score, but the MBA would require additional work experience. Depending on your career path, you may want to try applying now or you may want to delay for an MBA. I am happy to explore the options further with you.

  • 2017-03-02 Scott PersonalMBACoach

Thank you for your profile post. Cornell, Kenan-Flagler, Carey, Darden and Duke are all reasonable schools to target that you would have a decent chance at getting in. I would say a very good chance for some of the schools (assuming you are applying in round one this fall). If you want to reach for a school like Columbia or Wharton, your extra-curriculars would need to be stronger and I would want to develop your profile further before deciding on them for sure.

If you are looking for help during the process, we can start with working on crafting your career path and ideal post-MBA goals. Send me a message by clicking on my name to discuss. Cornell Tech would be a very good fit for you in fact.

    Good luck!

Thank you for the detailed profile information! You have a very interesting background and if you can get a good GMAT score, you should have a good chance at a number of these schools. Given the amount of experience you have, are you considering an Executive MBA? You would be 35 by the time you start school with 11 years of experience, so I would like you to benefit from networking with other executives vs. the students in a full-time program.

That said if you are set on a full-time, most of the schools would be reasonable for you. Yale, MIT and Columbia will be tough because of the amount of experience, but if you target Yale's EMBA program or Columbia's EMBA program, you could be very attractive. I have students in both and your profile is in line. The only EMBA that may be tricky is Sloan because they prefer a bit more experience.

Good luck and reach out if you want more help.

  • 2017-03-02 Scott PersonalMBACoach

Thank you for the detailed post and congrats on a strong GMAT score. I have a slightly different take here. I think your profile is pretty strong overall. While the undergrad GPA is a little low, the 770 makes up for that. If you can formalize the mentoring of students, this will serve to improve your profile further.

How many people are on your team and do you have direct leadership / management experience? If so that makes you even more attractive.

This is a good list of schools to target and given your healthcare focus, you picked great schools. I actually don't have a lot of changes to recommend but perhaps if you want to discuss your profile further and how we can work together on your applications, I can go into more details. I see a very good chance of getting into Duke and Ross and likely with some scholarships. The other schools are also good targets. Good luck and reach out to me to discuss further, which you can do by clicking my name above.

  • 2017-03-02 Rituparna Roy Chowdhury

Insead, MIT and Yale may be difficult but can be cracked if you can portray your profile well in the application. But others should be within your reach. You do have diversity and can add value to the class.

  • 2017-03-02 Rituparna Roy Chowdhury

Schools mentioned by you would be difficult to enter unless your build a much stronger profile.
You can strengthen your profile by adding to your extra-curricular activities as also projecting yourself as a strategic and analytical thinker. This is because management graduates who can come up with new ideas are the one who can bring about disruption, and achieve extra-ordinary results.
Therefore, all applicants should participate in different activities – be it social, cultural, political, economic, sports, adventure – or for that matter any or every activity that interests you. Writing in your university application essays or statement of purpose how you could acquire a new vision and a different thinking pattern because of the wisdom gained through your diverse engagements prove that you are a holistic thinker and integrated learner. One can apply to the top 10 Univerisities even with average academic background and a not very high GMAT scores if applicants can prove they hold a really broad profile.

  • 2017-03-02 Rituparna Roy Chowdhury

Targeting top b-schools need very strong extra-curriculars, your involvement in diverse activities, leadership and knowledge in vast areas. Universities look more at non-academic element of a candidate than past degrees. Knowing different languages, adaptability to new situations and circumstances and the passion and drive for out of the box thinking to bring about new solutions really matter.
So, rather than concentrating on GMAT score, I would suggest you to build your profile - for all that matters is not what you are but how your project yourself in the applications.

  • 2017-02-16 Rituparna Roy Chowdhury

    Dear Phaneendra,
MS programs to the colleges you have mentioned should be okay based on your profile. However, MBA may require more experience and a more diversified extra-curriculars. Rather than showing post-MS or post-MBA goals as Senior VP positions, project yourself as one who can visualise new possibilities to bring about new solutions. Universities prefer people who are innovative problem seekers rather than those who look for higher positions on job. You need to show a lot more in extra-curriculars.

Thank you for your profile details. While ISB and Georgetown may happen with this profile, you would likely need to improve your GMAT for UNC, and ideally even improve it for Georgetown given the competitive set that you come from. I also suggest widening your list and targeting 5 or 6 schools to really give you the best chance. The reality is there are a lot of IT analysts/consultants from India applying to schools and many have high GMAT scores. Good luck and reach out for any further assistance.

Thank you for providing this. How old are you currently? Based on what I see here, I think these schools would be reaches for you and even with a 730 I would recommend adjusting your list of schools and/or type of program (FT 2 yr vs a part-time for instance). If you want to explore that further, let me know. Things may work out anyway at your target schools, but it would be a stretch.

If you can raise your GMAT above 700, you will likely have a good shot at these schools. It is important to work on your story and try to have something differentiating since you do come from a competitive set. I also suggest thinking about where you want to live and work after school and letting that drive your selection from a location standpoint.

Applying to the top b-schools may be a little ambitious unless you can come up with extra-ordinary extra-curricullars and some really outstanding examples of past work. How you visualise future amidst an era of evolving technologies and disruptions taking place all around, also needs to be explained in your essays. B-schools look for those who can come up with unique and new ideas to make an impact in the world around us.

  • 2016-12-03 Rituparna Roy Chowdhury

You may apply to top 20 schools with the kind of experience you have. Try to project yourself as a value creator in the application, and how you can bring about disruptions as a result of your work in future. B-schools look for candidates who can identify new opportunities to create jobs and wealth for society. Please also try to show you are an innovator than a bookish learner.

Thank you for your post. Your meanswear manufacturing work sounds really interesting. I am curious to find out what startup you work for!

Depending on the GMAT, this is a reasonable list of schools. Sloan and Tuck will be challenging with a 700 GMAT, but if you can get closer to a 750 you stand a better chance.

Darden and McCombs are good options with a 720 and Judge could work out a bit lower than that. I do recommend trying to exceed the median scores to start to compensate for your low GPA in undergrad.

Reach out if you want to talk about how we can work together on your applications. I am working with a good number of advisory folks from the big names currently (and they are doing well in interviews) EY, etc.

    Good luck!

How did the GRE turn out? I suggest going one tier level down for schools based on the profile I see, but it is often recommended to apply to a wide range of schools so you can also include some more challenging programs.

You can get into top 20 universities by portraying a profile that you are an innovator and not a bookish learner.

Forget your past academic scores. US universities give more importance to the hidden potential inside for innovation and your ability to transform the world with your outstanding out of the box thinking. Try to show in your application the unique creative side of yourself, and what is the specific difference you can make. If you can do that, notwithstanding low or average past academic scores, you would be lapped up by the universities.

Remember, Edison went to school only for 3 months in his life time. When Einstein was in his middle school, he was a very ordinary student. Bill Gates and Steve Jobs were college dropouts.

In reality, ordinary students can deliver extra-ordinary results if they have the passion and drive for innovation.

  • 2016-11-12 devanshigoenka94

    Other scores would be :
    Xth standard : 8.8 CGPA/10
XII th Standard : 93.75% CBSE

Have my GRE scheduled on 15th expect to get above atleast 310 & TOEFL expectation 110

Did a small research project in the final year of UG on online shopping.

Thank you for the note. Who do you work for now and what is your role in marketing? NUS may or may not work depending on the GRE score, though the other schools are more likely to work out with the right application strategy, with the exception of Chicago which will be a stretch from what I see. Contact me if you want to discuss working together on your applications.

To provide some more specific advice for you based on your target school list...

What is your demographic background? This will be important.

    From what I see here:
HBS, Stanford: Stretch. Not likely to happen but you could target
MIT, Booth: Slight stretch as well to be honest
McCombs, Toronto, NUS: Target schools that have a better chance of working out with the right profile

Again, let me know your demographic background and send me a note if you are interested in working on your applications together. I went to Wharton for my MBA and MIT for BS and run Personal MBA Coach, a boutique consultancy. I am also closely aligned with consulting firms and can discuss career prospects.

Thank you for your post. For UCLA and Emory, I suggest retaking the GRE to try to get a higher score. If you want to discuss tutoring options, let me know, either my clicking above to send me a note or visiting my site.

BU, Wisconsin are likely to happen

Vanderbilt may or may not happen.

Thank you for your post. I would be happy to weigh in but you haven't provided much information to go off. Per the prompt here, if you want to give more details it would help. For instance, what is your specific grade out of 100? Any work experience? These are all really hard schools to get into for the PhD programs so a lot more info is needed first. Research experience? You can apply to the top 20 universities depending upon how well you portray yourself to come up with out of the box thinking for future. Describe your vision for the future of your areas, and how with your creative thinking you can transform those areas. Talk less of your desire for bookish learning in the application. Rather portray yourself as an innovator. That would win you a seat in a good college. In other words, forget your past academics, and think of how future would shape up in different fields, and your role in that.

  • 2016-11-04 Rituparna Roy Chowdhury

To apply to top universities, you need to have very strong and diverse extra-curriculars as also have a vision for future. Universities look at the futuristic element in the applicant, who can bring about disruptions with out of the box thinking. They rather don't prefer those who have the attitude to be an executor but not an innovator. If you can't portray your others interests so strongly, then it would be better to apply to top 25 universities and not the premier colleges.

  • 2016-11-04 Rituparna Roy Chowdhury

Ordinary students can get accepted at top universities - recently, a 17-year old girl got accepted at MIT who is not even a matriculate. Would any Indian university accept such a candidate? But US universities do, if they find a true scientist inside you.

Yes, an average student can get into MIT or Stanford.
