Each entrance exam has its own format and needs a definite study plan to pass with flying colors. In India, CAT and IIFT are the two most coveted tests for admission in top B-schools of the country. While former is acceptable in IIMs, the latter is an exam conducted by Indian Institute of Foreign Trade (IIFT) for admissions in its Delhi and Kolkata campus. IIFT is much trickier than CAT but if you have prepared well for CAT, you can easily take an attempt at IIFT because their syllabus is nonetheless similar in most aspects. IIFT is more focused on accuracy and speed while CAT lays impetus on conceptual understanding of various subject matters. The main differences between the syllabuses of both these tests are:
CAT vs IIFT Quantitative Aptitude or QA:
This section is trickier and lengthier in IIFT. Questions are based on topics like ratio, percentage, simple equations, inequalities, geometry, probability, permutation combination, etc. IIFT can have certain questions from higher level math as well. Hence, it is advisable to stay prepared for these questions when studying for CAT quant section. CAT requires a lot of conceptual knowledge to solve this section but in IIFT, accuracy with speed matters the most.
CAT vs IIFT Verbal Ability or VA:
In IIFT, focus is given on direct vocabulary, sentence correction, and paragraph questions. It has 15-16 questions framed from 4 passages of 100-1200 words. CAT emphasizes on usage of vocabulary for answering the questions from comprehension and also for sentence structuring through filling in the blanks. It requires students to thoroughly understand sentence correction and word usage.

These questions are mostly based on graphs and tables while case lets have also been used in some previous year papers. The questions are generally based on coding-decoding, mathematical operators, number system, syllogism, eligibility criteria, and arrangements.
General Awareness:
This section is unique to IIFT. It has focus on business trivia along with many questions of general knowledge and current affairs. Studying year books and reading daily newspapers can largely aid you in solving this section successfully.
The course content of CAT and IIFT has no major difference apart from some topics. Hence, while studying for CAT, you can simultaneously prepare for IIFT as well. Only, you’ll have to make extra efforts to study general awareness and take lots of practice tests to improve your speed impeccably.
