Let us get one thing out of the way before we dive into the debate: There is absolutely no substitute for a good GMAT score. Now that this fact is accepted and agreed upon, let us see how B-Schools in the U.S and Canada treat GMAT score and work experience vis-a-vis each other.
The bottom line is- your work experience is always going to be your ally but nothing would be remiss in a few institutions while the others would definitely want it on your resumé- loud and clear.
While the U.S. top Schools look for an average of 3-4 years of Work experience, Canada expects a little less. Let’s look at a few premium B-schools, which you may consider, provided you have the “things” necessary to break through the clutter:

Schools in the United States (US):
HARVARD BUSINESS SCHOOL
While they require a GMAT score of around 700 and above, they aren’t very keen on work experience being absolutely essential. But beware- Harvard is Harvard. They emphasize more on your profile than anything else under the sun.
WHARTON, University Of Pennsylvania
Wharton on the other hand looks favorably upon work experience and expect you to have a score ranging from 790-620 and a work experience of 5-6 years.
Haas – University of California, Berkeley
An average score between 725- 790 will get you in but will need to be substantiated by a 3-5 year work experience.

Schools in Canada:
ROTMAN SCHOOL OF MANAGEMENT, University of Toronto
A score anywhere upward of 600 will get you in along with 2 years of work experience to back you up.
SAUDER, The university of British Columbia
A GMAT score of 550 or above will get you into this business school while it does now specifically demand any work experience on the part of the student.
QUEEN’S SCHOOL OF BUSINESS, Queen’s University
A score of 600 and above will grant an easy passage into this B- School. They do ask for 2 years of work experience.
Evaluate Your Options
Now that we are clear as to where students with varying scores and work experiences can apply, you may now evaluate your chances. If you score a little on the lower side, Canadian Business Schools might be a better idea for you over U.S. Business Schools.
Other thing worth reconsidering is that while U.S is considered the Mecca of Business studies, Canada is the resurgent force in education on this date. The cost of living, immigration laws, ease of working are factors more favorable in Canada than in the U.S. currently.
However, if all your boxes are ticked, you can be one of the prestigious few who can have the incomparable Crimson Harvard chip or the Wharton name on your side.
