Good GMAT Score vs Work Experience Weightage in India’s Top Ten B-Schools

This table highlights the expectations of top ten institutions that offer MBA in India and where they stand on the work experience vs. GMAT score debate. How much will your work experience augment your score? Does it make a difference? If so, how much? If no, how little?

As it comes to experience required, these B-schools are a mixed bag. They score high on the GMAT scale but are versatile on the work experience requirement front.

IIM-A might overlook work experience in case of a regular MBA but in case of an executive MBA, the B-school needs it needs a whopping ten years of experience. 700 or higher

INDIAN INSTITUTE OF MANAGEMENT, BANGALORE

The preferable work experience is minimum 2 years but IIM-B is also known to overlook work-ex as a selection criteria and focus more on academic history, profile and entrance score 700 or higher

INDIAN INSTITUTE OF MANAGEMENT, CALCUTTA

It does specifically never call for work experience but your chances of getting through increase with two years or more work-ex under belt. 700 or higher

INDIAN SCHOOL OF BUSINESS (ISB), HYDERABAD

ISB Hyderabad prefers minimum 24 months’ work experience for applying to its flagship Post Graduate Programme (PGP) in Management. 700 or higher

XLRI , JamshEdpur

XLRI asks for a minimum five years work experience after graduation for the General Management Programme, which makes fairly high for India. 700 or higher

FACULTY OF MANAGEMENT STUDIES, DDELHI

FMS does not specifically give weightage to work experience but 2 years’ work-ex under the belt has helped aspirants crack through provided they displayed strong academic history and leadership merits. 650 or higher

SP Jain Institute of MANAGEMENT, Mumbai

Known for its global outlook towards management education, this premier Mumbai based B-school of India takes work-ex seriously. Even though freshers are welcome to apply but the PGPM course has seen the classroom mostly with work-ex ranging from of 2-5 years. 650 for Indian applicants and

600 for international students

NARSEE MONJI INSTITUTE OF MANAGEMENT STUDIES, MUMBAI

Two years of work experience in corporate or in social sector either as NSS/NCC student. Work experience shall be exempted for fresh graduates having BSW/MSW or M.A. in Social Work. Has its own entrance examination

INDIAN INSTITUTE OF FOREIGN TRADE, DELHI

An Indian school mostly known for having graduated some of the most noted academicians and finance experts of India, IIFT does not specifically emphasize on a mandatory work-ex. However, a substantial work-ex always helps to pace the case. 690-700

INSTITUTE OF MANAGEMENT TECHNOLOGY, GHAZIABAD

IMT has four campuses of which the Ghaziabad campus is considered to be the best. There is no particular requirement of work-ex to stand eligible for IMT but the following factors are considered in making a final offer: academic record, performance during the CnPI, written communication test, personal interview round and work-experience. 600 or higher
