The Perfect GMAT Study Plan To Ace The Test

You can’t alter your GPA or work experience, which are considered by admission officers, but you can make a difference to your chances by boosting your GMAT score. A score over 700 will put you amongst the top 10% of test takers and with 730 score, you will be amongst the top 4%. Now if you want to make it to the best B Schools, then that’s the score you are looking to get.

The reality check

  • Aiming higher doesn’t mean getting your head in cloud nine. There’s a long way before you get to the elite group of the top 10%. And you are not going to get there by taking shortcuts; if it were possible everyone would have made it to the group and it wouldn’t be top 10% anymore.
  • Another important thing to remember is that following a study plan alone will not help you beat the test. Hundreds and thousands of GMAT takers follow a study plan. If you want to score high in the test, you have to live, breathe excellence. But at the same time it’s important to get enough sleep, which is crucial for deep learning.

GMAT Study Plan with a purpose

However study plans are made for a reason and our job is to help you make the most out of them. Ideally you need to give your prep three months, with about a couple of hours devoted to your studies every day.

  • The First Week – Baby steps. Acquaint yourself with the structure of the test, different types of questions, time limit, scoring system etc. You can then a practice test to know your baseline score and understand your strengths and weaknesses.
  • Weeks 2 to 5 – Do the Math. You might consider yourself an expert but remember that you will be seeing Data Sufficiency type of questions in the Quant section. Choose the best resource materials and spend these four weeks understanding important concepts.
  • Weeks 6 to 10 – Half way stage. Experts believe that you need to give five weeks for your Verbal prep. It doesn’t mean you stop practicing Math, but solving a few questions every day will be enough. Understand different Verbal questions, know where you lack and focus on those areas as you progress through the weeks.
  • Weeks 11 to 13 – Practice tests, Essay and AWA. Your score on Analytical Writing Assessment and Essay section doesn’t count towards your GMAT score. So it’s okay to prepare for these sections at the end. Take at least 10 practice tests that will make you feel confident for your GMAT.

This study plan can be your way to the top 10% or even top 4% of GMAT scorers.
