How long should I study for GRE?

This is a question in the minds of many aspiring GRE takers. Simply put, your study timelines should be long enough to ensure that you cover every concept, take practice tests and come back for revision. In addition, the answer to this question depends a lot on your own strengths. If you are someone who is very good with math, probably you may get away with a couple of months of preparation as well.

Ideally, you should start preparing at least six months prior to the actual exam. If you are fresh out of school, you may be more familiar with the concepts. Working professionals might need more time to grasp the concepts. If you are an avid reader and have a stronghold on vocabulary, it makes more sense to spend time on math problems. Non-native English speakers will need to allocate more time to strengthen their GRE verbal section

Obviously, if you are caught for time and want to take the exam as soon as possible, devote at least 6-8hours every day for a month. However, we recommend a minimum of three months to become extremely comfortable with the exam format and topics.

Of course, if your goal is to attend one of the top schools for the program of your choice, you may want to leave no stone unturned towards your efforts. If you want to score very high for scholarships, you have to spend more time preparing for the GRE.

The length of your preparation also depends on the time available at your disposal. Working professionals may only be able to devote a couple of hours to their studies every day, so they may need a longer timeline. Students fresh out of college usually have more time at their disposal. So, a shorter preparation timeline should suit them well.
