What is the IELTS test?
The International English Language Testing System (IELTS) is one of the world’s most popular tests for English proficiency. Commonly used by both students and immigrants, two million IELTS test are administered globally every year. It is accepted by more than 9000 government and academic organizations across 140 countries. IELTS is managed jointly by the British Council, IDP: IELTS Australia and Cambridge English Language Assessment.
Who should take the IELTS test?
IELTS is a British test, so if you are aiming for universities in the UK the test is your best bet. Even some schools in the US accept IELTS scores, so make sure that you check with the schools of your choice.
IELTS Academic vs IELTS General Training
IELTS offers two versions to test takers – IELTS Academic and IELTS general Training. If you want to pursue an undergraduate or post graduate program, choose IELTS Academic because it measures English language skills needed to succeed in a higher learning environment. IELTS General Training should suffice for those of you want to travel for work, migration or pursue other small duration courses. If you are not sure of where you are headed, go for IELTS Academic since it is the most recognized version of the test.

What is the IELTS Test Structure?
You are tested for English language listening, reading, writing and speaking – all in the same order. The first three sections are to be taken on the same day without any break in between. Depending on local arrangements, you can either take the speaking section on the same day or seven days before or after the day. Also, you can expect a range of native English speaker accents (North American, Australian, British).
The total exam time is 2 hours and 45 minutes. For the Listening section, you are allocated 30 minutes. You are given 60 minutes each for Reading and Writing. For speaking, you get around 11-14 minutes.
How is IELTS scored?
You cannot fail in the IELTS test. Each of the four sections are rated on a score band of 1-9. You are also given an overall band score. This score is crucial to your acceptance by the desired school. You will get your results after 13 days.
When can I take the IELTS?
IELTS Academic is available for 48 days every year across the globe. The IELTS General Training is available 24 days in a year.
Where can I get prep resources for IELTS?
The British Council offers a number of free and paid test prep material for IELTS. There is also a mobile app available on iOS and Android. Also, QS LEAP will soon be introducing free IELTS preparation.
What is the cost of taking the IELTS test?
