TUTOR BIO

So, how would you add integers from 1 to 100?

1. Literally add,

2. Use formula,

3. Use Common sense.

Let us analyze each approach.

1. No time and patience for this.

2. Will work in this situation. But do we have/know formulae for all situations?

3. Works in a majority of situations. But is common sense is common?

Here is how the 3rd approach works. If we add the first and the last number, the second and the second-last number and so on, the sum would be 101 every time. So there are 50 pairs of numbers, each adding to 101. The sum is hence 5050.

Competitive exams are not about mastering math, but about seeing every problem as a situation of ‘common-sense’. Remember, they are not checking your math skills (else there would be marks for steps). They are checking your ‘aptitude’ - which is your natural ability to do something. Now, for most of us, ‘Math’ is something which does not come naturally, right? My job is to arouse that natural curiosity in you every time you face a math question. My forte has been to take the ‘fun’ out of fundamentals and make students fall in love with this subject. Overcoming the fear of water is the first step to excel in swimming. Likewise, overcoming the fear of maths is the first step towards excelling in your quantitative section of the exams. All the best!
